Climate (insert scary word here)

Hasn't the latest climate debate gotten completely out of hand. I want to express a view that I think (hope) many regular folk may well share.

To put it as simply as possible people, Humanity considers itself above and disconnected from nature and for the most part modern society believes that because we are really really clever we have won the war with nature and it is now subordinate to us. We also have very short term memory and foresight, we are not eternal and neither are our resources.

Heres some homework, watch any history of the planet documentary and you will see that in the blink of an eye the planet has been hot, cold and presently comfortably in between. There is a natural cycle that quite frankly we cant possibly hope to understand. Along with the natural cycle there are theories abound about the cause of the transition from one 'Age' to another from Dinosaur farts to catastrophic impacts. Secondly watch a documentary on how oil came to be in the ground and consider the maths just briefly

*,000,000 years to create oil resource x Volume of the earth / Rate at which we pump it out of the ground  = We will run out of oil

Lets be totally honest and admit we really are infants dipping our toe in a universe of knowledge but at the very least understand that changes to our environment happen naturally but that also activity on the surface of a planet with a very fragile ecosystem most certainly affect changes.

The argument then turns to whether this is a good or bad thing and what should we do about it all. People exist on every continent and can survive pretty extreme conditions, it's how we ended up running the show in the first place, we adapt and in that we are superior to all other lifeforms. The problem arises when we decide that we like things just the way they are and only get worse when we direspect nature. This is where it all gets messy for humanity...

There are public voices being given to all sorts of looneys who clearly have not stopped to take a breath and consider the reality we face and to put the cherry on top the task of 'what do we do about it' is being handed to politicians whose career longevity is determined by a popularity contest.

Climate science has not existed for long enough to provide absolute certainty. There are too many variables for reliable predictions and although there is fundamental agreement that 'shit happens' There are nutters making extreme predictions which did not come to pass (Homework , how many years ago was global cooling considered the next threat to our existence)

Now for the other nutters (who believe our environment is static and has never changed and will never change despite our best efforts to fuck it over) The Scientific nutters have handed them predictive data on a platter to 'disprove' the science. Then the Media (who by the way make money from providing 'news and opinion' based on their marketing science, which is far superior to climate science) jump aboard and dig up the next headline from the abuse the nutters are scaring eachother with.

Keeping in mind that both media and politics are driven by popularity and that popularity is measured regularly through readership figures and opinion polls, these people REALLY understand what floats our boat, they have a century of data about us and our habits and make decisions and decide policies (Be very clear on this next bit) "IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THEMSELVES". There is no mention of the planet without it being a story that sells papers or a policy that wins votes.

To be continued ......
